In late June President Obama signed into law the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) or Cash for Clunkers program. CARS provides a rebate for consumers who trade in qualifying gas guzzlers for more energy efficient cars. Unfortunately, even before the program began, scammers were attempting to ply their trade and Better Business Bureau offers the following guidance for car shoppers on how to participate in the program and avoid getting scammed.

While businesses find it increasingly more difficult to qualify for loans and lines of credits, small business owners are resorting to applying for loans from behind the façade of shelf corporations. Better Business Bureau is advising small business owners that, as tempting as these schemes sound, using a shelf company in order to misrepresent your credit worthiness to a bank could be considered loan fraud.

BBB has received complaints from homeowners across North America who were subjected to high-pressure sales tactics and felt deceived by the salesperson into buying an expensive alarm system.

Better Business Bureaus across the country are receiving reports of a new scam on Craigslist that deceives buyers by falsely claiming BBB accreditation and participation in a phony buyer’s protection program. BBB warns that there is no such thing as a BBB Purchase Protection Program and any online seller claiming participation in this program is scamming customers.

Better Business Bureau warns that deceptive door-to-door magazine sales crews are hitting the pavement and looking to earn a quick buck this summer. In the last 12 months alone, BBB has received 1,100 complaints from consumers in 46 states and the District of Columbia against more than 50 companies that are selling magazines door-to-door.

The way consumer credit scores are calculated has changed. The Fair Isaac Corp. – creator of the FICO score – announced on January 29 that their new scoring model for determining credit scores, dubbed FICO 08, has been instituted and Better Business Bureau offers advice to consumers on how their credit score might change and what they can do to maintain a healthy credit rating.
